| The AQN/NY is a group of
artists whose stitched hangings and art quilts are created with fabric
and thread. Current and past AQN/NY members hail from across the United
States and have truly defined the fiber art movement. Since 1989, the AQN/NY
members have come together for annual meetings which include lectures,
critiques, gallery visits, networking and workshops. Most of the AQN/NY
meetings have been held in New York City; however the group has also met
in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. New members are chosen based on the
recommendation of current AQN/NY members.
The term "art quilt" only
somewhat defines the work of the AQN/NY members. It does not encompass
the individuality, exploration and variety of these talented artists. Some
members' work relates closely to the quilt format, while others' connection
to the quilt tradition is less apparent. Members use a variety of techniques,
including but not limited to: collage, embellishment, stitched illustration,
dyeing, photographic processes, whole cloth or patchwork, fabric painting
and more .... all created with fabric.
Some members create large-scale
commissions for architects and designers. Some work independently in their
studios and create one-of-a-kind pieces. Many members exhibit in museums
and galleries around the United States and some exhibit internationally.
